Student of the Month

We are so pleased to introduce Giselle Diaz-Fierro as our February HS Online Options student of the month. As a student who has encountered extenuating circumstances she has demonstrated what it means to be an exemplary online learner who sets the bar high not only for HS Online Options but for all students at Jackson High School. Giselle utilizes her stellar time-management skills to balance her sport and academic schedule maintaining an A in her physics class.

When asked the following 5 questions, this is what Giselle had to say:

What are your academic endeavors?

My academic endeavor is focused on preparing myself to reach my goal and attend the University of Washington.  

What are your strengths? 

My strengths lie in my persistence through challenges and my  determination to achieve my goals, no matter the obstacles or the time it takes.

What sports or hobbies do you enjoy?

I am on the JHS varsity Cheer team, and I really enjoy it.

What would you like people to know about you?  

I really enjoy baking and would like to become a teacher in the future.

What makes you a successful online learner?

Effective time management is really crucial for my success, especially in an online course. Creating a schedule allows me to stay organized and on track.

Congrats to Lauren Nikolin

Lauren is a senior at Everett High School and in her first semester of HS Online Civics. It was obvious Lauren cared about the content in her online class, and she submitted high-level work.  Her excellent communication skills helped her excel in the online environment. She managed her time well and kept up with the due dates. If there was going to be an upcoming conflict with schedules, Lauren was proactive and reached out to her instructor far in advance.

When asked the following questions, Giselle answered:

How many online classes have you taken with us? Have you taken any other online classes with any other programs?

I have taken one online Civics class through Everett Public Schools, but I would absolutely take more if needed. I had a great experience taking Civics online because it gave me a lot of flexibility. I am also a Running Start student, so I take college-level courses alongside my high school classes.

Why did you take online Civics?

I needed a credit in Civics to graduate since I am currently a senior, and the online format fit perfectly with my Running Start schedule.

What do you like about taking an online class?

I like the flexibility of online classes and the ability to manage my own time. Online learning has helped me become more organized, responsible, and self-motivated. I also enjoy being able to work at my own pace while still engaging deeply with the material.

What are your plans after high school? Where do you plan on doing your post-high school studies?

After high school, I will graduate college at the same time with a Business DTA Transfer degree. I plan to keep this as a strong backup option while I explore other career paths, such as 911 dispatching. If all goes well, I am also considering continuing my eduation by pursuing a bachelor's degree in accounting. As a side project, I am interested in starting a coffee cart business, possibly over the summer.

Congrats to Tatiana Taylor!

Tatiana is a senior at Cascade High School. She stands out in her Online Myth & Legends class. Her quality work shows deep thought and curiosity. She manages her time well, submits work consistently and stays in contact with her instructor. This is the first online course she has taken! She plans to take Cinema Visions second semester and wishes she had taken more online classes in high school.

When asked the following questions, Tatiana answered:

Why did you take online Myth & Legends?

I took online Myths & Legends because I usually work better independently than in a group, so I wanted to see if I could handle the challenges that come with being in an online course where you must be self-sufficient.

What do you like about taking an online class? 

I have enjoyed being in an online class because it has been helpful knowing which assignments I'll have for each week ahead of time so that I can plan how I want to spread out my workload. I also like that I can work on my own and start assignments as early as I want, so that I have enough time and am satisfied with my work.

Are you involved in any clubs/activities/sports or anything else? Hobbies? 

I am the treasurer for AVID 12, I am in the National Honor Society. I enjoy painting, listening to music, and cooking in my free time.

What are your plans for your future?

I plan to go to a 4-year university to study science and public health so that I can ultimately enter a career that allows me to explore disease spread and strategize how to prevent infections and illness.

Congrats to Daksh Arun Pawar

Daksh is currently an 8th grader at Heatherwood MS and is taking Algebra 2 online. He completed the first semester of Algebra 2 with an A and has moved into the 2nd semester course. Daksh will earn a full year of Algebra 2 this semester. He demonstrates all the qualities of a successful online learner and is excelling in his online course. 

When asked the following questions, Daksh answered:

What are your academic endeavors?

I dream of majoring in quantum or applied physics and becoming a physicist.

What are your strengths?

I love math, and after years of practice and dedication, I've become quite adept in all areas of mathematics that we are learning about.

What hobbies/sports do you enjoy?

My favorite sport is BADMINTON, and I hope to go professional. I also like playing with my two dogs.

What would you like people to know about you?

I am a kind and optimistic student/friend, and I can most probably help you with any homework. 😉

What makes you a successful online learner?

I plan out / manage my time well, making sure to balance all of my work.

What do you like about taking an online class?

It is self-paced, which gives more freedom to slow down on new subjects and speed up on older/easier ones.

What are your plans for your future (after graduation)?

To become a quantum physicist or astrophysicist. If all else fails, I'd want to go pro in badminton (Nationals).

Congrats to Rie Merriman

We are so pleased to introduce Rie Merriman as our October HS Online Options student of the month.

As an eighth grade student at Port Gardner she has demonstrated what it means to be an exemplary online learner who sets the bar high not only for middle school but for all online learners in the district. Rie utilizes her stellar time-management skills to balance her sport and academic schedule maintaining an A in her Biology and the Environment class.

When asked the following 5 questions, this is what Rie had to say:

What are your academic endeavors?

“I haven’t decided yet, but I’ll keep working hard and putting effort into my studies.”

What are your strengths?

“I am good at focusing on my schoolwork without getting distracted.”

What sports or hobbies do you enjoy?

“I do fencing as a sport, and I enjoy drawing, crafting, and reading in my free time. I also like listening to music.”

What would you like people to know about you?

“I have been fencing since I was 9 (I am 14 years old now). I am traveling a lot because of my tournaments. Sometimes it is really difficult to handle school and fencing, but I want to keep a good level for both of them, and I want to reach my goal.”

What makes you a successful online learner?

“I like to look at upcoming assignments ahead and make a plan to complete each of them before the due date. Making a to-do list is very helpful.”

Congrats to Karolina Soloviova

Karolina stood out right away in her Online English 3 class. She logs in consistently and submits quality work on time which allows for teacher feedback. Her assignments are thorough and thoughtful. 

She took English online because she enjoys working at her own pace and having flexibility with her schedule. She said, “I like that it lets me focus better and manage my time more easily. I also like being able to work ahead when I can.” 

In addition to working hard on all her classes, Karolina enjoys listening to music, baking, cooking, art and being creative. She also loves volunteering at her church.

After high school, Karolina plans to go to college and study art, design, or psychology. Her ideal path would lead her to become a 3D model artist!

Congrats to Aeries Erickson

We are so pleased to introduce Aeries Erickson as our May Online Options Student of the Month.

She has exemplified what it means to be an exemplary independent learner and sets the bar high not only for Family Health students but for all online learners.

What are your academic endeavors?

I’m aiming to get my bachelors degree in pre-veterinary animal science. I will be enrolled in WSU’s program for it this fall. Hopefully I can manage the heavy science classes! My ultimate goal is to become a veterinarian or a shelter director. 

I’ve taken a good amount of challenging classes in school- one of my favorite classes is Advanced Leadership. I love helping plan events for the school. I also loved my AP classes the most, like AP language and AP history, because though they were hard, they were very interesting.

I’m graduating this year with a 3.7 GPA, 2 big scholarships, and lots of amazing memories!

What are your strengths?

I’d have to say my emotional intelligence, my ambition, and my communication skills.

What hobbies/sports do you enjoy?

I love volunteering at animal shelters. I’ve been doing it since junior year, and it brings so much happiness and fulfillment to me. I started out at the Everett Animal Shelter as a Feline Volunteer, and after a year of simple socialization tasks, I wanted to move on to something more hands-on. I now have a position as a Post-Surgery Clinic volunteer, where I help the veterinarians by moving cats from the clinic to their designated rooms, cleaning, & preparing their tool kits. I absolutely love working in the clinic, shelter, and outside setting with animals. 

What would you like people to know about you?

HS Online Options is proud to introduce our April Student of the Month - Sophie Atkinson.

Sophie stood out in her Online Civics and College & Career Readiness classes due to her timely, thoughtful, and thorough work. She is also great at communicating her needs to her instructor - all qualities of a superb online student!

Why did you take online CCRS?

I took online CCRS to give myself more flexibility with my schedule and allow more time to focus on schoolwork while trying to balance several extracurriculars. However, it's also nice to get to school a period later so I can get more sleep every day.

What do you like about taking an online class?

I like that I can pretty much complete the assignments any time I want and even work ahead if I want to. I also like that I can take more time to focus on assignments or topics that I may struggle with and take less time on assignments or topics that are more straightforward.

Are you involved in any clubs/activities/sports or anything else?  Hobbies?

I am on a competitive dance team, so I spend most of my time outside of school taking dance classes and rehearsing the pieces I have to perform. I've also been on my school's swim team for the last three years. Something I started doing this year, however, is volunteering with cats at the animal shelter.

What are your plans for your future?

I plan to go to university in Canada at the University of Waterloo to study computer science and participate in their co-op program. My goal is to be a software engineer or work in the field of cybersecurity someday.

Miriam is currently taking Algebra 2 from HS Online Options while taking the rest via running start at Edmonds Community College. This path she has chosen will help her earn her AA degree by the time she graduates. Miriam has met and exceeded all requirements in Algebra 2 as well as being a self-advocate. Her plan after graduation is to attend the University of Washington.

What are your academic endeavors?

“My academic endeavors are focused on the achievement of a degree that I enjoy, as I am specifically interested in learning how things work and fixing complex problems. I am excited to learn about the mechanics of systems in order to someday be able to help contribute to advancements in the field.”

What are your strengths?

“My strengths include problem-solving, logic, and attention to detail.”

What hobbies/sports do you enjoy?

“I enjoy playing sports and hobbies like volleyball and soccer and learning new technology.” 

What would you like people to know about you?

“I would like others to know that I am dedicated, hardworking, and motivated.”

What are your post high school goals?

“After high school, I plan to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering and work in the field of manufacturing.”

“I am a successful online learner because I stay organized, manage my time well, and am self-motivated to understand complex concepts.”

Congrats to Ana Melzani

We are so pleased to introduce Ana Melzani as our February HS Online Options student of the month. She has demonstrated what it means to be an exemplary online learner, setting the bar high not only for Online Physics but for all online learners. Ana is a capable student with stellar time management skills, juggling work and school while maintaining a 97% in her physics class.

When asked the following 5 questions, this is what Ana had to say:

What are your academic endeavors?

“My academic endeavors are to be successful in the career I choose to pursue. To be able to surpass the expectations and look back on how far I’ve come and grown”

What are your strengths?

“My strengths are knowing what to put first, as my priority. Focusing on what matters most and separating my needs from my wants. I’m also strong on dividing my personal life from work life.”

What hobbies/sports do you enjoy?

“The hobbies I enjoy are playing piano, acoustic guitar, and drawing. They are the ones I spend hours practicing.”

What would you like people to know about you?

“I want people to know that I am a very charismatic person, caring for others as much as a mother would. I love seeing people smile and laugh about stuff I say or do. It brings me joy to make others happy.”

What makes you a successful online learner?

“The independence that online offers makes me feel successful in the online environment. I can sit down and get work done days in advance. I can also make time for the assignments I don’t fully complete, making sure they're submitted and checking for feedback.”

Congrats to Madison Montanari

Madison impressed her College and Career Readiness teacher with her tenacity. She has excellent communication skills which helped her to excel in her online class.

She says, “Online CCRS gave me resources in order to succeed when I needed help. I was able to complete assignments and get perfect scores. I now have a plan for my future finances for college and jobs that will help me be able to pay off bills.”  College and Career Readiness is the third class Madison has taken through High School Online Options having taken Civics and PE 101 in the past.

Madison enjoys participating in advanced choir and orchestra and likes drawing in her free time.  She plans to attend BYU and pursue a degree in arts or business.

Congrats to Liam Kessinger

Liam is currently taking 3 online classes this semester along with 2 classes at Jackson HS. He has all the qualities of a successful online student and is excelling in his online courses. 

When asked why he was drawn to online courses, Liam said he was dealing with social anxietyand he thought learning online would help him be a more productive student. HS Online Options has given Liam the ability to work on his online classes when he has time during the day which has alleviated his stress level. HS Online Options has helped him become a more successful student. 

In his free time, Liam loves gaming and playing the electric guitar. When asked about his strengths, Liam stated he is hardworking. His work ethic shows in his perseverance in this course. In his Algebra 2 class, Liam is always current with the due dates or works ahead. 

Liam plans on attending college after high school possibly pursuing a degree in the field of Pharmacy.

Congrats to Anna Wellenbrock

Anna’s work in Online English 203 stands out due to her thorough and thoughtful responses and her ability to manage her time well and keep pace with course due dates. 

Anna discovered that HS Online Options courses were a good fit for her after she took Family Health and PE1 in summer school. Taking her English course online gives her the opportunity to self-motivate away from a traditional classroom setting.

She says, “I like taking online courses because I have a lot of time and space to do my assignments freely. It's easier for me to plan times for English work and organize my workload because I'm the only real variable. Moreover, I love that I can motivate myself and feel genuinely happy with the work I'm submitting because I can give myself as much time as I need for an assignment.”

Anna is part of the Bibliophile Society club at EHS. Some of her favorite hobbies include reading, writing, singing, and listening to music.

Her future plan is to earn as much college credit as she can in high school through the Running Start Program and graduate with her associate's degree. After high school graduation, she plans to attend a state college and complete a bachelor’s degree and possibly pursue a master’s. She hopes to have a career related to writing and/or law.

Congrats to Sahana Prabhu

Sahana has exemplified what it means to be an exemplary independent learner and sets the bar high not only for Yoga Core students but for all online learners. When asked the following 4 questions, this is what Sahana had to say:

What are your academic endeavors?

“In the future, I plan to pursue a degree in computer science, followed by an MBA. My ultimate goal is to enter project management, where I can apply my technical and leadership skills to manage successful projects.”

What are your strengths?

“My strengths include strong leadership and organizational skills which help me effectively manage both academics and extracurriculars. Additionally, I am creative, always willing to explore new ideas and adapt to anything that comes my way.

What hobbies/sports do you enjoy?

“Some of my hobbies include singing, drawing, and baking.”

What would you want people to know about you and what makes you successful as an online learner?

“What makes me successful is my ability to stay focused and persevere through challenges. Furthermore, my commitment to making a positive impact drives me to keep pushing forward, and my attention to detail ensures that I deliver high-quality results in everything I do. These qualities help me stay on track and achieve my goals. One thing I want people to know about me is that I founded Pages of Hope, a community service organization dedicated to empower children in our community. Our goal is to foster a love for learning and help children in need thrive academically. My team and I are currently working on an upcoming book drive to collect and distribute books to the children in need in our community.”

Congrats to Esther Kim

Esther is currently in the 2nd semester of Algebra 2 online while taking a full load through running start. She has all the qualities of a successful online learner and is excelling in all her courses. 

When asked what she likes about online courses, she stated “Online courses offer me flexibility and convenience in managing my schedule. I appreciate the ability to learn at my own pace and access course materials from anywhere with an internet connection. Additionally, the interactive nature of online discussions and multimedia resources enhance my learning experience.”

She is truly taking advantage of everything an online course offers. When Esther is not studying, she loves to bake and draw. These activities allow her to unwind and express her creative side. Having a healthy balance between school work and leisure helps her be a well-rounded student.

After graduation, she plans on continuing her education at a four-year university. Esther will pursue a degree in Radiology or Forensics. She is very excited about her future and where the knowledge she has gained will take her. Congratulations Esther for being HS Online Options April Student of the Month!

Congrats to Rafael Gefter

Rafael Gefter is our Feb 2024  Online Student of the Month!  Rafael is currently taking online Civics, where he has excelled and is a true class leader.  He is a passionate online student and does exemplary work in all areas of the class.

Rafael enjoys the flexible pacing provided in online classes.  Instead of being bound to a set schedule of face-to-face classes, he can work at his own pace, often finishing his weekly work ahead of schedule, freeing up his time for other things.

Rafael is a senior at H.M. Jackson High School and also enrolled in the  Video Game Design program at Sno-Isle TECH Skills Center, where he spends part of each school day.   He enjoys a variety of video games and loves taking walks while listening to music. He is also interested in designing and building a computer and he is in the Jackson High School History Club.

Rafael is a driven and motivated student with a bright future!  He will succeed in whatever he pursues. Congratulations Rafael!

Congrats to Leila De Folo

We are so pleased to introduce Leila De Folo as our January Online Student of the Month. She has exemplified what it means to be a successful independent online learner and sets the bar high for all other Walk FITT students.

Leila's says this about her future plans, “As a running start student, my current endeavors include continuing to get A’s in all my classes at Jackson HS and Cascadia college. I am 15 years old and for my future academic goals, I plan on graduating with a 4.0 GPA, achieving my associates degree at 16 years old, my bachelor’s degree at 18 years old, joining the AirForce as an officer, and completing medical school. My career goal is to become a radiologist.”

Two of Leila's biggest strengths are time management and determination. "I have always been good with prioritizing tasks and making sure each one gets done in an orderly fashion. My determination to finish all my homework assignments, do my best on each one, and get assistance when I need it, has helped me to excel in each class I have ever taken.”

Leila is also involved in the JHS Sports Medicine Club, church activities, shows at her local acting studio and takes part in the Washington State Parks Youth Leadership Board.

Thank you, Leila, for enriching the Online High School Program here at Sequoia. We are fortunate to have you as a learner and are inspired by your determination and work ethic!

Congrats to Samishthi Kalidoss

 Samishthi is currently taking online Precalculus as a 7th class on top of her full schedule as a Sophomore at Jackson HS. The full schedule at Jackson HS includes 4 out of the 6 that are AP classes and she is earning straight A’s. Her future goals are to earn a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science Engineering and pursue her MBA. 

Some of the important attributes of a good online student are being an Independent Learner, Self-Motivated, and Organized (to name a few). Samishthi obviously has all of these covered with her busy schedule and academic accomplishments. Besides her 7 period day, she is heavily involved in Jackson HS clubs. Some of the clubs she belongs to are the Sophomore Student Congress, DECA, TSA, NHS, Girls who Code, Youth Leadership Board for Washington State Parks, and Computer Science Honor Society. 

Even with her demanding schedule, she still has the time for herself. She likes to read and draw, watch movies with her family (murder mysteries and romantic comedies), and listen to music (One Direction). She is also a black belt in taekwondo, loves to go bicycling and hiking. With all of this, she is still interested in volunteering. 

It is obvious that Samishthi is driven to succeed in whatever she has her mind to do.

Congrats to Ndayiragije Shukurani

Everett High School senior Ndayiragije Shukurani has been selected as the October 2023 Online Student of the Month. Ndayiragije took two online classes this semester, Civics and Walking, and has done an outstanding job in both courses.  He has done high-quality work in Civics, has submitted everything on time, and has even worked well ahead of the posted due dates in the class. Ndayiragije leads by example and has one of the highest overall grades in Civics class.  In his other online class, Walk FITT 1, Ms. Hodgins, his Walk FITT instructor, says he exemplifies the goal-setting process and is communicative and ambitious. 

Ndayiragije says, “I chose to take online classes because they offer great flexibility, allowing me to learn at my own pace and save time.” He says he likes taking online classes because he is able to learn from anywhere and online classes offer him more freedom.

 He is involved in the Everett High School Student Store, along with BSU, Basketball, and Track & Field and his goal is to pursue Track & Field in college.

Congrats to Ivy Leigh

Ivy Leigh is an ambitious and successful Cascade High Freshman who is currently taking English 2, Health, and Algebra 2 online.

She rises above her peers with her time-management skills, balancing academics and gymnastics competitions. In addition, Ivy is a problem solver and strong communicator with all of her online teachers.

 Ivy likes taking some classes online because she enjoys the flexibility this allows and is able to submit assignments ahead of time and not have to worry about being behind.  Ivy says, “ I am able to plan, prioritize, and organize tasks and assignments. I am able to set a schedule to meet deadlines.” 

Outside of school Ivy dedicates her time to gymnastics, taekwondo and family and still manages to dabble in art and enjoy reading.

Congrats to Madilyne Robinson!

Madilyne is a junior at Everett High School currently enrolled in Online Family Health who has raised the bar early on for her peers by submitting ALL assignments, discussions, and quizzes in a timely manner complete with thorough and thoughtful responses. She has demonstrated that she is a goal-oriented self-starter by finishing her online course 3 weeks early and a problem-solver with strong communication skills to boot.

Madilyne says,  "I am comfortable spending five plus hours each week on this course to learn material, read announcements, watch videos, participate in discussions, and complete course assignments. I am able to plan, prioritize, and organize tasks and assignments. I am able to set a schedule and meet deadlines. I am not a procrastinator. I like to get things done today and not tomorrow."

 Congrats to Jasis Simons

Jasis is a senior at Cascade High School. She is taking Online Myth & Legend as an English elective. She logs in consistently and paces herself well in the course. Her work is thoughtful and thorough and demonstrates a curiosity about the world.

Jasis says, “Taking an online course has been a great learning experience! For this particular course, I have learned about many different myths, and learned how to deeply analyze them to get a better understanding of their purpose in all sorts of different cultures.“In her spare time, Jasis enjoys reading, writing, art and dance. She finds that these activities allow her to express herself and relax.  Here is an illustration she drew in response to our work on the Greek myth about Echo which was accompanied by a written explanation of the characterization and drama it illustrates:After high school, Jasais plans to attend a 2-year college. After that, anything is possible!

 Congratulations to Elle Caple, our March 2023 Online Student of the Month recipient.

Elle is currently taking Walk FITT 2 and Advanced Algebra 2 from OnlineHS and is doing great. She is always staying on track and works ahead in her classes. Elle is not afraid to ask questions and is a self-advocate.
After Elle graduates, her goal is to obtain a double major in Psychology and Criminal Justice which will help to reach her goal of working for the FBI in the Behavioral Analysis Unit.  So far, she has taken 5 courses from Everett Community College along with earning College in the High School credits from the University of Washington for a Psychology course.

When Elle is not in school or studying, she enjoys baking and making videos of the baking process. Elle also enjoys journaling, reading and watching The Vampire Diaries or Criminal Minds.  
Elle is focused on taking every opportunity to invest in her future. Her future looks very bright.

Congratulations to Sekani Mallahan - our February Online Student of the Month

Sekani made great strides this semester. Sekani said “I was able to look past mental health issues that held me back and go from failing all my classes to passing all of them.” This semester he has learned how to ‘push through’ some of these obstacles and has succeeded. A big part of this process was Sekani learning how to be an advocate for himself. He noted, “I learned to communicate even though I wasn't able to do that very well before.” Building relationships with his instructors and regular attendance were key components to his success along with his ability to analyze and articulate his strengths and weaknesses.

The online team is incredibly proud of Sekani. We are looking forward to seeing Sekani continuing to build upon his success.

Congratulations to Everett High School senior Kellen Chambers, our January 2023 Online Student of the month recipient.  Kellen did an outstanding job in online Civics, submitting all of his work on time and leading by example. In addition to Civics, Kellen has taken four other online classes with us. He feels he is more successful when he is able to work at his own pace. He said taking an online social studies class allowed him to free up his schedule. When asked what he liked about online classes.

Kellen said, “I like the flexibility of online classes. I can complete my work when I feel I am ready to complete it and can move ahead when I want. This allows me to do my work in chunks at a time and if I am overloaded with another course but am ahead in this one I can focus just on the other course.” Kellen plans on finishing his coursework at EvCC to earn a nursing degree (RN) and then he will transfer to UW Bothell for their nursing program to earn a BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing). Congratulations to Jackson High School student, Emma Kim who is our December 2022 Online Student of the month recipient. Emma is a multi-faceted learner combining life-long aspirations of Archery with her pursuit of Optometry. Emma holds high standards for herself in the world of academia and physical fitness by maintaining a high G.P.A. and a rigorous training schedule. Emma is successful in both Online courses Psychology and Walk FITT and her classes at Jackson, and is competing on the worldwide stage in Archery boasting a first place finish in her last competition. Emma is a master time-manager in all of her endeavors and it has been a pleasure to have her in our program. 

Francis Ricafrente Is the OnlineHS Student of the Month for November 2022! Francis has done an outstanding job in Online Civics and has led by example, producing exemplary work and going above and beyond on all the class assignments and projects. Congratulations Francis!

Reese Rozal - Reese is a Senior at Cascade High School and is excelling in her Online Myths & Legends class. She is a very observant student and especially stood out in her ability to analyze paintings based on well-known myths. This is her first online class and she chose to take it because she was interested in the subject matter.  She plans to take Cinema Visions online second semester.  Way to go Reese!
